The reading is an average: the number of protons in any individual cube fluctuates. Dots are rounded to the nearest whole proton and their sizes are greatly exaggerated. Above 200 protons/cm³, each dot represents multiple protons, as shown in the key.
Electrons are not drawn. The cube and the Sun–Earth spacing are illustrative; particle motion is slowed down so you can follow it.
