The Geminids — the year's strongest meteor shower
On the night of December 13–14, 2026, the Geminid meteor shower hits its peak: up to ~120 meteors an hour under dark skies, bright, slow, and often colorful. And 2026 is a good year for it — the crescent Moon sets by mid-evening, leaving the sky dark for the shower's best hours. No telescope needed.
1What makes the Geminids different
Almost every meteor shower is the dust trail of a comet. The Geminids are the exception: their parent is 3200 Phaethon, an asteroid — a three-mile rock on a comet-like orbit that swings closer to the Sun than Mercury. Nobody is entirely sure how a rock sheds a debris stream this rich; "rock comet" is the working nickname, and it's an open research question.
The rocky debris matters for the show. Geminid particles are denser than cometary fluff and hit the atmosphere slower — about 35 km/s, versus the Perseids' 59 — so they burn longer and brighter. Geminids are known for bold, sometimes yellow or green meteors rather than quick faint streaks.
2How to watch
- When: this is the family-friendly shower — worthwhile from about 9 or 10 PM, unlike showers that make you wait past midnight. Rates keep climbing to a maximum around 2 AM, when Gemini is nearly overhead.
- Where to look: the meteors radiate from the constellation Gemini (near the bright star Castor), rising in the east-northeast in the evening — but they streak across the whole sky, so a wide view beats staring at one spot.
- Conditions: get away from city lights, dress much warmer than you think you need (December, lying still), and give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adapt. A phone screen resets that.
- The active window: the shower runs from roughly December 4 to 17, so the nights around the peak are worth a look too.
